Tuna / sailfish time
Report Date: May 11, 2011
I know sometimes we don’t update these fishing report as often as we should. If you were to ask me the best month to fish in south florida I would always say April / May. This year is no different. The big blackfin tunas and kingfish have been biting very well. As the kingfish and tunas travel north from the keys they have to pass through Miami. We’ve been catching them up to about 35 pounds.

There have been a few really kingfish hitting the dock from other boats. One tipped the scales at 63 pounds caught on one of the party boats out of Haulover. Although we’ve been catching them all through the day, the late afternoon trips have been the most productive. The tunas and sailfish have been hitting live pilchards and herring usually fished from our kites when the wind allows us to fly them. We always put out a deep line, fished close to the bottom. Catching mutton snappers up to about 8 pounds.

The deeper wrecks have been producing big amberjacks and black groupers. The dolphin have been small at about 7 or 8 miles offshore, but this time of year it’s hard for us to leave the action on the reef. Get in on the action. Give us a call !!
